当士师管治的时候，国中遭遇饥荒。在伯．利恒．犹大，有一个人带着妻子和两个儿子往摩押地去寄居。
Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Beth-lehem-judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.
这人名叫以利米勒，他的妻名叫拿俄米，他两个儿子，一个名叫玛伦，一个名叫基连，都是伯．利恒．犹大的以法他人。他们到了摩押地，就住在那里。
And the name of the man [was] Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Beth-lehem-judah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.
後来拿俄米的丈夫以利米勒死了；剩下妇人和她两个儿子。
And Elimelech Naomi's husband died; and she was left, and her two sons.
这两个儿子娶了摩押女子为妻：一个名叫俄珥巴，一个名叫路得；他们就在那里住了约有十年。
And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one [was] Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years.
玛伦和基连二人也死了；剩下妇人，没有儿子，也没有丈夫。
And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband.
她就与两个儿妇起身，要从摩押地归回；因为她在摩押地听见 耶和华眷顾自己的百姓，赐粮食与他们。
Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread.
於是她和两个儿妇起行离开所住的地方；她们就要回犹大地去。
Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah.
拿俄米对她两个儿妇说：「各人回她娘家去吧。愿 耶和华恩待妳们，像妳们恩待已死的人与我一样。
And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother's house: the LORD deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me.
愿 耶和华使妳们各在新夫家中得平安。」於是拿俄米与她们亲嘴；她们就放声而哭，
The LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each [of you] in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept.
她们对拿俄米说：「我们必要与妳一同回妳本国去。」
And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people.
拿俄米说：「我女儿们哪，回去吧。为何要跟我去呢？我还能生子作妳们的丈夫吗？
And Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? [are] there yet [any more] sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?
我女儿们哪，回去吧；我年纪老迈，不能再有丈夫。即或我说，我还有盼望，今夜又有丈夫，也可以生子；
Turn again, my daughters, go [your way]; for I am too old to have an husband. If I should say, I have hope, [if] I should have an husband also to night, and should also bear sons;
妳们岂能等着他们长大呢？妳们岂能等着他们而得丈夫呢？我女儿们哪，不要这样；我为妳们的缘故甚是愁苦，因为 耶和华伸手攻击我。」
Would ye tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them from having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD is gone out against me.
她们又放声而哭。俄珥巴与婆婆亲嘴而别；只是路得舍不得拿俄米。
And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her.
拿俄米说：「看哪，妳嫂子已经回她本国和她所拜的众神那里去了；妳也跟着妳嫂子回去吧。」
And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law.
路得说：「不要催我离开妳，或是回去不跟随妳。妳往哪里去，我也往那里去；妳在哪里住宿，我也在那里住宿。妳的民就是我的民，妳的 上帝就是我的 上帝。
And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, [or] to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people [shall be] my people, and thy God my God:
妳在哪里死，我也在那里死，也葬在那里。除非死能使妳我相离，不然，愿 耶和华重重地降罚与我。」
Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, [if ought] but death part thee and me.
拿俄米见路得定意要跟随自己去，就不再劝她了。
When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, then she left speaking unto her.
於是二人同行，来到伯．利恒。她们到了伯．利恒，合城的人就都惊讶，他们说：「这是拿俄米吗？」
So they two went until they came to Beth-lehem. And it came to pass, when they were come to Beth-lehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they said, [Is] this Naomi?
拿俄米对他们说：「不要叫我拿俄米，要叫我玛拉；因为 全能者使我受了大苦。
And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me.
我满满地出去， 耶和华使我空空地回来； 耶和华既降祸与我， 全能者既使我受苦，你们为何还叫我拿俄米呢？」
I went out full, and the LORD hath brought me home again empty: why [then] call ye me Naomi, seeing the LORD hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?
这样，拿俄米和她儿妇摩押女子路得，从摩押地回来到伯．利恒；正是动手割大麦的时候。
So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Beth-lehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
